St. John's, NL – The St. John's Edge picked up their 20th win on the season, defeating the KW Titans by a score of 101-97 on Wednesday night at Mile One Centre
This was another must win for the KW Titans and another game that could put the St. John's Edge one step closer to clinching their playoff birth.
After a tough loss on Tuesday night, the Edge were looking to turn the tables and come away with the win. They showed some tenacity early on, grabbing a 5-0 lead to begin the first quarter, capped off by an Olu Ashaolu bucket.
Playing for their season, the Titans would claw their way back at the halfway point of the fourth quarter tying it up at 11. Both teams would be held scoreless for over two minutes when Jared Nickens knocked down a corner three to put the Edge back up by a couple. Following an exchange of baskets, the Titans would convert on their next four possessions to hold a 22-20 lead after one.
As the second began, KW would find their rhythm from behind the arc, dropping a couple of three-point attempts to begin the quarter. The answer for the Edge would come in the form of a couple of Glen 'Big Baby' Davis layups to tie this one at 27.
A couple of small runs by the Edge would put them out front by 10 points with just over 3 minutes to go in the quarter. The Titans would look to Ed Horton to reduce the lead. However, the Edge would get a big three by Isaiah Tate II late to head into the half up 45-38.
Coming out of the break, it would be a test of mental toughness for both teams. On the Edge side, they would look to keep their foot on the gas pedal and try and close this one out. Meanwhile, the Titans would look to repeat their late-game comeback as they did a night prior.
In the third quarter, the Edge would continue to feed the ball to the inside, specifically to Glen Davis. Davis would drop 13 in the third alone. The Titans would stick around as they got some consistency in the post themselves, while also hitting a couple of triples as the quarter drew to a close. The Edge would hold a 70-66 lead as the game went into the final 12 minutes.
The final quarter was physical, to say the least, both teams would end up in the bonus around the 5-minute mark, making every possession that much more valuable. KW would jump out in front with a two-possession lead on the strength of some good transition offence.
However, the turning point in this one would come at the 4:38 mark when Flen Whitfield would pick up his sixth foul and be done for the night. This meant that Derek Hall would have to hold down Glen Davis in the final minutes to give the Titans any chance for the win. After Davis collected his 33rd point on the night, Junior Cadougan would play fourth quarter hero for the Edge. With the clock ticking down and Edge up, 96-93, Cadougan would convert a mid-range jumper to extend that lead and eventually put this one to bed by a score of 101-97.
The night was won in the low blocks, as the Edge picked up 58 of their 101 points in the paint. They also outrebounded the Titans 46-29.
Offensively, the Edge were led by Glen 'Big Baby' Davis who dropped 33 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and added 3 assists. Dez Lee would also pick up another double-double to add to his totals for the season. The two-way player dropped 12 points and picked up 11 rebounds in the win.
For the Titans, they were led by Ed Horton who dropped a team-high 26 points in the loss.
