The Magic have added another very talented player to their training camp roster, announcing today the signing of former NBL Canada Rookie of the Year, Jaylon Tate
The NBL's top rookie in 2017-2018 started 43 games for the Niagara River lions, averaging 13.4 points and 7.4 assists per game in his inaugural pro season. This did not go unnoticed by Magic Head Coach and General Manager of Player operations Joe Salerno, who has high praise for the young Point Guard.
"I thought Jaylon was a unanimous pick for the Rookie of the Year Award two years ago. He is an extremely talented point guard, who does so many things well" commented Salerno. "We actually had a big interest in signing Jaylon at the start of last season, but ultimately he ended up going overseas. I felt he was one of the best point guards in our league two years ago, now with two years of pro ball under his belt, I think Jaylon is ready for a coming out party."
Last season, the Chicago born and raised PG played for Pyrinto Tampere, in Finland's top league, Korisliiga. His stellar play continued is his sophomore campaign, as Tate continued to put up solid number's night after night. The 6'3" Tate averaged 14.3 points, to go along with 4.7 assists per game for Pyrinto, while shooting over 50% from the floor, and 40.7% from the three-point line.
Tate says he is looking forward to playing back in Canada this season, and has his eyes set on one goal.
"I couldn't be more excited and thankful for this opportunity to be playing for such a great organization" stated Tate. "I'm looking forward to getting there and putting in the work with my teammates and Coach Salerno. Winning another Championship is the main and only goal! Let's get started!"
Tate will join an already stout Magic backcourt, with the likes of returnees Corey Allmond, Jason Calliste, Wayne McCullough and Marcus Lewis. NBLC veteran's Jeremiah Mordi, and Theon Reefer, along with rookies Brandon Alston, Dinjiyl Walker, and Brandon Neel will round out the backcourt, in what Salerno believes will be a "very competitive" training camp.
Fans will have their first opportunity to see the team in its entirety at their annual Inter-squad Game on November 19that Crandall University. The game it set to tip off at 7pm, with tickets available at the door, which will open to the public at 6:15pm. All proceeds from the game will go to Crandall Athletics.
