Lacking the complete reconstruction that many consider necessary, it seems that in the Pelicans there is finally a willingness to change things. According to Jake Fischer and Marc Stein in The Stein Line, the Louisiana franchise is looking to move Jordan Hawkins via a trade, thereby attempting to refresh a roster that has for years suffered from an incomprehensible immobility.
Nevertheless, starting the renewal with Hawkins implies starting it very slowly. Although in his early seasons the shooting guard seemed poised to establish himself as a shooter with some heft off the bench, his role has been reduced during the 2025-26 season, in which he has played less than ever and it has begun to become clear that in New Orleans he does not count for much. And from there this situation has now come about.
Hawkins will see his rookie contract expire in 2027, so this attempt to include him in a move seems to signal that there is no intention to re-sign him and that the plan is to extract something in return before losing him for nothing. After all, we are talking about a player who is still 24 years old and for whom another franchise might want to take a chance if the price to pay isn’t too high, giving him an opportunity to change scenery and try to rebuild his career.
In that sense, Stein and Fischer point to the Memphis Grizzlies as a possible suitor, a team that, given the youth of its roster, Jordan could fit in well. Although, with 19 players on the roster, in Tennessee they must think about trimming the squad before trying to bring in more players.
