Kawhi Leonard’s photo sits beside the word ‘uncertainty’ in the latest edition of the dictionary. With the NBA investigation still underway and his trade to the Raptors currently paused, the forward doesn’t even know whether he’ll be able to play during the 2026-27 season or which team he’ll be with if he can play, and, with the latest developments, it’s not clear that his situation will be resolved soon. However, according to Jake Fischer in The Stein Line, he hopes everything will be clarified in the coming weeks.
Specifically, the forward is confident that a resolution will be reached before the training camp begins, allowing the trade to Toronto to become official and enabling him to start the preseason with his new team. There is still room for that to happen, as the Raptors do not hold their Media Day until September 28, but given the pace of developments, it’s hard to assume that they will move with the swiftness Kawhi expects.
And while Adam Silver has stressed the need to bring the investigation to a close as soon as possible, it continues to open new fronts. After learning that, in addition to his contract with Aspiration, Leonard had another supposed agreement aimed at circumventing salary caps, this time with Daktronics, it isn’t far-fetched to think that the process, which has already dragged on much longer than desirable, could be stretched even further. And in fact, there are already voices suggesting we could reach 2027 without an answer.
Nevertheless, everyone seems aware that the ideal is to find a solution as soon as possible, especially considering that this uncertainty affects not only the alleged violators. Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick, sent to the Clippers in the trade, do not know where they will play next season, and even for the rest of the league it is desirable to have a clear understanding of the Clippers’ situation.
So, for the good of the league, there is nothing left but to hope Kawhi’s intuition on the matter proves correct.
