The arrival of LeBron James has raised expectations in Philadelphia. At least for one of the best playmakers of the 21st century and LeBron’s former teammate with the Los Angeles Lakers, Rajon Rondo.
From the point of view of the point guard, the 76ers have not only assembled a roster capable of contending for the championship, but should already be regarded as one of the main favorites, despite the numerous questions surrounding veteran stars such as Joel Embiid, Paul George, or even LeBron himself.
But Rondo goes beyond the raw talent available in Philadelphia. At this stage of his career, he understands that the No. 23 has deemed the locker-room atmosphere and the ability to truly enjoy being in it as essential.
“I think the characters in the locker room make a big difference. LeBron is at a point in his career where surrounding himself with the right personalities matters as much as talent”, Rajon explained on the podcast Road Trippin’. “He wants teammates with whom he can truly enjoy, have fun, and build real chemistry”.
James maintains a good relationship with Tyrese Maxey and has long held a great respect for Joel Embiid. Additionally, according to published reports, Nick Nurse was the only coach he spoke with during the summer.
But, of course, Rondo’s enthusiasm also rests on the team’s athletic potential. And Philly has taken a tremendous leap by also adding none other than a Finals MVP: Jaylen Brown, as well as another intriguing profile in Anfernee Simons.
“It was a brilliant move. I mean, you’ve got what could be the best young point guard in the league,” continued Rondo regarding Maxey.
The former player turned to chess to explain LeBron’s innate ability to make the most of the virtues around him. “Bron is, you know, the king of the board. He has many pieces, all the right pieces to perform the moves correctly. We all know that he is an extraordinary player and one of the best basketball minds who have practiced this sport.”
“If you give him this kind of pieces with which to play, my initial bet is that they are the favorites to win. At least, in my opinion. I’m not the type to bet, but if I had to, I’d bet on the Sixers soon.”
