Edwards Expects Timberwolves to Beat San Antonio and OKC

August 17, 2026

The Minnesota Timberwolves seem to have faced the summer of 2026 as a make-or-break moment. After several years during which, despite their competitiveness, they remained a notch below the West’s giants, the Minneapolis franchise has launched a bold gambit with risky moves aimed at delivering the quality leap they have long awaited. And, at least in Anthony Edwards’ view, they may have achieved it.

During his visit to Manila, the shooting guard was asked about it, pointing to the Spurs and Thunder as the rivals to beat in a brutally tough Western Conference and wondering whether the Timberwolves had reached that level. The guard was clear: “I think we’re going to beat those two teams,” he told Rob Andrew Dongiapon, ESPN journalist.

Nevertheless, after those audacious statements, Edwards tried to temper the enthusiasm a bit. Despite his optimism, the guard underscored that the roster has a long road ahead and that any potential success must come from continual work, so, before talking about rings, he stressed the importance of building a squad that can truly defeat the two conference giants.

“Winning a ring would mean a lot, but right now we’re not thinking about it. We have to take it step by step. We have LaMelo and several new players, so we’re trying to build something. And we want to do it together.”
