The turmoil within the Buss family clan continues.
Whether they sell. Whether they don’t. That Jeanie Buss is challenging the sale on the grounds that the votes were not majority.
In short, according to the family’s unofficial spokesperson, namely journalist Shams Charania, the five Buss siblings, with the exception of Jeanie, are indeed in favor of selling their Los Angeles Lakers shares.
“The Lakers have never been just a basketball team. They have been one of the greatest privileges of our lives,” the family statement read.
“Johnny, Jimmy, Janie, Joey, and Jesse have decided to sell the family’s remaining stake, and we remain united in that stance,” he added.
In June 2025, the Buss family decided to sell the Lakers to billionaire Mark Walter for a record sum of 10 billion dollars.
At that time, the Buss brothers felt misled by Jeanie, who considered the sale to be “very rushed.”
And just one year later the franchise changes hands again amid the alleged legal troubles of the aforementioned Walter.
The new buyers: Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, for another record-breaking sum of 12.5 billion dollars.
And within the Kushner–Iger purchase, the Buss brothers voted in favor of transferring their remaining shares, namely the 17.8% they hold in the family trust.
Kushner and Iger bought roughly 65% of the Lakers’ shares, and together with those of the Buss family, they would hold about 83% of the total equity.
“We feel a tremendous respect for them and believe they understand what the Lakers mean to Los Angeles and to our incredibly loyal fan base,” they explained.
“We trust that they will honor everything this franchise represents, building on the foundations laid by our father,” they concluded.
