Nobody at the Paycom Center celebrated the Thunder’s 108-101 win over the Clippers too much. How could they, when just moments earlier they had witnessed one of the most chilling injuries the NBA has delivered in years. Jalen Williams drove to the basket, was fouled, and fell to the floor on his own right leg, which was bent at a completely unnatural angle that left everyone present in a state of shock.
He himself could not react in any other way than to bring his hands to his mouth when he saw the position of his foot relative to his knee. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander fought back tears, and the general feeling was one of total shock even among the opponents. The forward himself was quickly attended to and left the floor on a stretcher to a roaring ovation. A couple of minutes later, the game ended, and no one cared about it anymore.

“Right now, we’re not doing very well,” was all Mark Daigneault had to say on the matter. Shai, for his part, offered a bit more.
“I feel awful for him. It’s going to be very hard to lose a player of his caliber, but he isn’t gone for good. We know he’ll come back better than ever. We just have to endure until then,” the Canadian said. “He’s had very bad luck, but he’s prepared for it. He loves to play and he loves to compete. That’s what defines him.”
The franchise has not yet provided a diagnosis, but the starkness of the footage makes an extended absence for Jalen Williams almost inevitable, given that his absence last year was already devastating for the Thunder. With only 33 regular-season games played, the wing couldn’t arrive in peak form for the playoffs, where health issues struck again, leaving OKC diminished in its bid to chase another ring.
Oklahoma has shown itself to be a great team even without him, but a few months ago it became clear that he is an indispensable piece for going head-to-head with the league’s bigger opponents. Now, therefore, all that remains is to await a diagnosis while we hope the severity of the injury does not match the brutality of the images.
