A few weeks ago, the Charlotte Hornets learned that Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams had suffered injuries that would keep them out of the preseason and possibly the start of the regular season. Today, a new name has been added to the list. The Hornets from North Carolina announced that Coby White has sustained a strain in his left calf, which will force him to miss at least all of the preseason games, leaving the team even more depleted as they look ahead to the coming weeks.

The announcement did not provide an estimated return timeline, merely stating that updates would be issued when available. Thus, it remains unclear whether the guard will miss only the preseason games or if his absence will extend into the early games of the regular season, a development that could pose some issues for Charlotte at the start of this new chapter.
With LaMelo Ball’s departure, White is expected to take on a larger role than last season, during which, after his arrival in February, he functioned as the sixth man and contributed 15.6 points and 3 assists per game off the bench. He was subsequently rewarded with a three-year, $74 million extension that underscored the Hornets’ confidence in him, a trust he will need to prove by helping the team preserve its identity and offensive brilliance from the point guard position.
Charlotte will begin the regular season by visiting Brooklyn on October 21, which gives White a 15-day window to recover. We will see if that proves sufficient or if the season opener features another player stepping into the starting point guard role.
