Anthony Edwards Takes Off Like Michael Jordan

October 22, 2026

All eyes were on Giannis Antetokounmpo, making his debut in a Miami Heat jersey.

However, Anthony Edwards ended up stealing all the spotlight by starring in a standout game.

Only two players in NBA history have begun a season with 40 points. And we are talking about two legends: Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan.

The Timberwolves star overwhelmed the Heat with 45 points, 10 rebounds and 9 made triples to secure a 131-106 victory.

“This game has been crazy,” Edwards admitted.

The Timberwolves’ star moved like a fish in water and scored more triples than Erik Spoelstra’s entire team (8 of 33 attempts).

His stat line ended up at 16/29 from the field; 9/17 from beyond the arc and 4/5 from the free-throw line.

Edwards is the first player in history with 45 points, 10 rebounds and +5 triples converted in the season opener.

“Given his mindset and his abilities, Anthony (Edwards) has always thrived in moments like this. He lives them with intensity and embraces them,” highlighted Chris Finch.

“And opening night is always special for any player,” the coach acknowledged.

It was also true last season for Edwards, who reached as high as 41 points against Portland.

And he has repeated it in this 2026-27 campaign with 45 against Miami. 12 points in the first period; 9 in the second; 15 in the third, and another 9 in the fourth period.

Chamberlain managed to score 40 points in four consecutive opening games between 1959 and 1962.

For his part, Michael Jordan accomplished it three times: 1986, 1989 and 1995.
