José Manuel Calderón’s career in NBA front offices has truly taken off. While until now he was linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers as an advisor, the Ohio franchise has announced changes to its leadership structure, placing Calderón in the role of assistant to the general manager; in other words, he becomes part of the organization’s hierarchy.
It has been Kobi Altman, President of Basketball Operations for the Cavs, who has made public the changes in the executive pyramid, also highlighting the promotion of Brandon Weems to the position of general manager, Jon Nichols to general manager associate, and Brendon Yu to assistant to the general manager (the same as Calderón). They have also brought Dashiell Flynn on as Director of Technology of Basketball Operations.
«Brandon has earned this opportunity thanks to more than a decade of exceptional work with the Cavaliers and for consistently demonstrating first-rate judgment and the experience necessary to help lead our basketball operations. He has been instrumental in our player evaluation processes and roster construction, possesses a deep understanding of our culture, and has become an outstanding leader», Altman defended the appointment of Weems.
Respecto al resto de nombres, destaca el gran nivel de todos los profesionales con los que seguirá trabajando, así como de Dashiell (el fichaje).
«Tenemos la suerte de contar con ese nivel de talento y experiencia en nuestra organización, y estos movimientos reflejan nuestra confianza en las personas que han ayudado a construirla y mantenerla. Ascender a Brandon, junto con Jon, Brendon y José, e incorporar a Dashiell nos permite mantener ese alto nivel de colaboración que valoramos, al tiempo que empoderamos a líderes de probada eficacia en sus respectivas áreas», sentencia.
Calderón’s Journey with the Cavaliers
Far from being a stranger to the fans of the Ohio team, we must note that José Manuel Calderón was part of the roster that reached the Finals in the 2017-18 season. There, a relationship began that in 2022 would lead to his joining the franchise as an advisor.
Cleveland notes that «desempeñó un papel fundamental ayudando a la dirección a alcanzar sus objetivos, tanto dentro como fuera de la cancha, en diversas iniciativas, estando entre ellas el Training Camp de 2026 de los Cavaliers en «The Embassy», en Andalucía».
Antes de unirse a la directiva, Calderón trabajó para la Asociación de Jugadores de la NBA (NBPA) como asistente especial del director ejecutivo; allí colaboró estrechamente con la entonces directora ejecutiva de la NBPA, Michele Roberts, y con el equipo directivo superior en cuestiones de estrategia sindical y temas específicos de interés para los jugadores actuales de la NBA.
