LaMelo Ball has always been an impactful player. In terms of image, creative ability, even irreverence… The current point guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves is one of those players you enjoy watching on the floor because you know that beyond the final result, it’s more about having fun. Well, his new coach, Chris Finch, is more about the first and less about the second.
Without intending to erase the essence of his new pupil, Finch understands that he needs to change his shot selection if he truly wants to align his style with an optimal on-court performance, both individually and collectively. This is how he explains it himself.
«He can knock down all those shots he takes, but making a living with those shots is different and very hard to do. So I think there needs to be some redistribution in how he shoots… If you want to be a good shooter, the first thing you must do is get rid of the bad shots. He takes some of those and can knock them down, but I think he has depended too much on them», he said in statements to MinnPost.

Starting from the premise that everything is improvable, it’s not that LaMelo has seen his percentages collapse just because he takes certain shots. To be precise, across his career he sits at 36.5 percent from three. The matter is different, however, in that the mistakes he accumulates at a given moment in a game can be very damaging if he doesn’t read that play well enough. There, indeed, in being effective and efficient, he could have a significant margin for improvement.
Injuries, LaMelo Ball’s Major Burden
Here is the problem that has slowed LaMelo Ball year after year. Between 2022 and 2025 he could only play an average of 35 games in the regular season, although it’s also true that in the 2025-26 campaign he was on the floor for as many as 72.
Looking ahead to this season, it is unquestionably essential for the Wolves to have their healthier version. The team has completely overhauled its model by removing a big man like Julius Randle to bring him in. And yes, the objective is none other than to take the definitive step toward reaching the final battle for the ring.
