Time passing isn’t helping Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons reach an agreement; in fact, according to multiple sources, including Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, the situation hasn’t just failed to improve, but the tension between the parties is growing to the point where a solution appears farther away than ever.
The reality is that both sides believe they are right. The center understands that after being an All-Star and All-NBA, and thus a key piece for Michigan to finish first in the Eastern Conference, he deserves a deal similar to what Victor Wembanyama has received, which stands at five years and $239 million. What’s the issue? As a restricted free agent, he has little leverage to press the organization.
From the franchise’s side, the calm shown so far, along with the firm stance of barely surpassing $30 million per year, has yielded no fruit. We’re talking about a total gap around $80 million, and neither side is willing to bend; so much so that there is talk that Duren could accept the qualifying offer of $9.6 million, but of course that would mean giving up a lot of guaranteed money…
At this point, unless one side concedes a bit, both stand to lose. We’ve already discussed the millions that could disappear for Duren, but the Pistons would see one of their most important players slip away, even if he doesn’t fully persuade them about the team’s long-term plans. By the way, the Kings reportedly offered Domantas Sabonis and were told no.

If there is anything that has hurt Jalen Duren, it has been his performance in the previous playoffs. After a regular season of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, his numbers dropped to 10.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in the postseason, giving the impression that he didn’t have enough basketball to answer the highest level of competition. Betting on doing better in the 2026-27 season and entering the summer as an unrestricted free agent? That seems risky.
