Jalen Suggs’ season was almost derailed by a serious injury. In an open-court foray to the basket, Suggs watched his knee buckle after a rare motion that left the guard writhing in pain beneath the basket. The play, which was non-contact, raised fears for his ACL.
Fortunately, the issue turned out to be a bone edema caused by knee hyperextension. For now, he will be sidelined for the next two weeks, at which point he will be reevaluated to determine his return to the court.
Jalen Suggs is no stranger to the Magic’s injury ward. Practically no one in Orlando is immune, one of the projects most battered year after year by injuries, even though none of its leaders has endured a devastating setback as Moritz Wagner and Jonathan Isaac did in their day. Right now, Paolo Banchero is dealing with an ankle sprain that will keep him out for four to six weeks.
Orlando sits at 1-2 solely thanks to the Knicks’ complacency, immersed in a slow start after a summer of perhaps too many celebrations. Their next two games are against Toronto, and then they will face Boston, Washington and Phoenix. The schedule tightens, but it does not choke.
