James Wiseman Gains Edge to Stay in the NBA

October 3, 2026

Although the spotlight is on the potential contract extension for Karl-Anthony Towns, which, by the way, is far from certain, there are other issues occupying the New York Knicks, such as deciding which player will fill the 15-man roster that will begin the season on the team. James Wiseman has now emerged as the favorite.

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the former No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft is making the most of his time and workouts with the team; he has impressed to such an extent that, according to people close to the situation, he should be the favorite pending confirmation of that status when the preseason games are played.

Another factor shaping the Knicks’ decision is that they seem inclined to have a third big man on the roster. Obviously Karl-Anthony Towns is the starter, and Andre Drummond is seen as a good replacement for the work that Mitchell Robinson did, but they understand that having another one to help the aforementioned would be a smart move.

Be that as it may, the final decision won’t be long in coming. Two days ago we learned that the Big Apple group waived John Konchar, so it’s clear they don’t want to leave everything to the last moment.
