With less than a month to go before preseason begins, Kevin Love remains unsigned and the Minnesota Timberwolves have an open roster spot. Two complementary developments that, twelve years after the forward-center left, could see their paths cross again in a reunion that appears to be taking shape.
A few days ago, Jon Krawczynski, a reporter for The Athletic, suggested that both sides could be interested in this option, and now Brett Siegel, during his appearance on the Clutch Scoops podcast, has weighed in on the matter. According to him, “right now it seems the most likely,” and he lists a series of arguments that would make the center a good addition for Minnesota.
“It would entail bringing in a player who knows what it is to be a champion, who is a franchise icon, and who is highly valued in the locker rooms. Moreover, he seems the perfect veteran to help Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball now that they are entering the prime of their careers”.
Love comes off a relatively minor role in his recent seasons in both Miami and Utah, adopting a mentoring role as Siegel suggests. In a team that has posted several playoff runs in which he performed well but did not manage to take the leap, a man who has reached four NBA Finals can perfectly fulfill that role and assist a still-young squad on its path, especially one with so much potential but with as many questions as these Timberwolves.
However, in a team that does not stand out for depth, particularly in the interior, perhaps the front office wants to dedicate the 15th roster spot to a player who can deliver more minutes than Kevin can offer right now. Whether such a player exists on the market is debatable, but in any case it seems that in Minneapolis they will let some time pass before finalizing the roster with a final addition.
