Mike Dunleavy Jr. recently granted an interview to ESPN in which he asserted that Stephen Curry will play his entire career with the Warriors.
The franchise player will enter his final year of guaranteed contract, and in recent days he has been linked with a move to the Boston Celtics.
“He hasn’t said anything different,” Dunleavy said about Curry’s future.
“His message has always been the same. It’s always what he’s told us. I think he’s on the right track,” he acknowledged.
For the upcoming season he will earn almost $63 million, and starting August 1 he could extend it for two additional seasons and nearly $137 million.
Sources close to the situation say the deal is virtually closed, and that Curry feels capable of playing at least two more seasons (he is currently 38 years old).
“Ultimately, it is always his decision. About whether he lets his contract expire and leaves as a free agent,” Dunleavy highlighted.
“Look, if he comes to me and says he wants to leave, that’s something I’ll have to discuss with Joe (Lacob). We wouldn’t like for that to happen, but he has earned the right to do it. As for any rumor placing him on another team, it’s not something we’re considering, and he isn’t considering it either,” he explained.
The Warriors’ plan has hardly changed. They unsuccessfully attempted trades for LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Instead, they have secured the continuities of Porzingis, Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II.
Additionally, they are monitoring the respective injuries of Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler III, who will not return at least until 2027.
“When building our roster we had to weigh talent against availability. There wasn’t a perfect solution in terms of the combination of both. We leaned a little more toward talent… We are taking some risk, but I believe we have valued talent over players who were available,” he concluded.
Porzingis played only 32 games last season. Horford appeared in 37. Melton missed the first half of the season, and their star Stephen Curry also faced physical issues, missing as many as 39 games.
