That is precisely what Anthony Slater of ESPN explains to his colleagues Brian Windhorst and Tim MacMahon on the latest episode of the podcast Hoop Collective. The reporter notes that within the franchise they have given Curry a blank check, as they will sign any deal he asks for.
“They insist they’re not negotiating with Steph Curry. They’ve simply told him: ‘You can do whatever you want. If you want the max for one year, if you want the max for two years, if you prefer to wait… You have the options. Choose the one you want’,” he emphasizes.
The bottom line is that Curry’s renewal is one of the hottest topics in the NBA. He has itself stated that his wish is to play his entire career with the Warriors, but it remains to be formalized in a new agreement. On that point, he has said he is not in a hurry and would rather focus on properly preparing for the season. He is not in a hurry, as he has until June 30, 2027 to sign an extension.
As for the numbers, Curry, who will earn roughly $62.6 million in the 2026/27 season, could sign a two-year extension worth up to $136.7 million. That cap is driven by a rule that blocks players older than 38 from signing extensions for three or four years. Another option is to wait to become a free agent in 2027 and seal a three-year deal.

In the discussion among the aforementioned reporters, there is also speculation about when Stephen Curry might have already decided on his future. All agree that the most likely scenario is that we’ll have news before the start of training camp, but they also stress that there is no rush.
One caveat to note is that San Francisco projects more than $100 million in salary cap room for the summer of 2027, so if Curry waits for an extension there would be greater chances for the front office to craft a competitive roster.
