Norman Powell has recently spoken about his departure from the Miami Heat.
The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade and the subsequent extension of Andrew Wiggins sealed the doors of the Florida-based franchise for good.
Now as a free agent he chose the best offer and decided to sign for two years and $45 million with the Chicago Bulls.
“Honestly, throughout the year I thought I would return to the Miami Heat,” Powell admitted.
“We knew they wanted Giannis. We heard some rumors that Giannis and Norman could fit quite well together… So I thought that would be the path. But Milwaukee seemed firm. If you want Giannis, you have to take Portis. And I think everything played a key role with the salary rules,” he explained.
After many back-and-forth twists and turns, Pat Riley finally closed the Giannis deal from Milwaukee that involved Tyler Herro, Kel’El Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and future Draft picks.
“They could have made moves and stuff like that if they had wanted. Obviously Wiggins had to decline his option and take less than $30 million, and they would have had to move Nikola Jovic. But in the end, teams do what they want. They didn’t make the moves necessary for me to stay,” he concluded.
