In one of the summer market’s most striking moves, the Minnesota Timberwolves landed LaMelo Ball. The arrival of the point guard responds to the need to do something to take a step forward, a sentiment even voiced by the team’s star player, Anthony Edwards. Have they nailed it? Chris Finch believes so.
The head coach of the Minneapolis club sees in the All-Star guard a piece that could give them options to become a different kind of team—one that is more dangerous and even physically tougher on the defensive end—while also underscoring the tactical benefits it could bring to Edwards’s own game.
“I see the possibility of crafting sharper, more incisive combinations. Putting Anthony Edwards into two-on-two actions with other teammates and the like. I think we now have greater flexibility in that regard. Having the point guard we currently have gives us the chance to use Anthony in a more strategic manner in specific situations we couldn’t capitalize on last year,” he told Britt Robson of MinnPost.
Finch is convinced that the breadth of options LaMelo grants them is magnificent, but he does not overlook Jonathan Kuminga, whom he sees as a pivotal element when it comes to sealing off the rim.
“On defense I want us to ramp up our physicality, pressure on the ball, and all those elements we have always sought to implement,” he stated when asked about the work that can be done with both LaMelo and the former Warriors forward.
