Giannis Antetokounmpo Kicks Off NBA Preseason

October 4, 2026

This is already underway, at least as far as the final preparations are concerned. After starring in the summer’s big trade, Giannis Antetokounmpo played for the Miami Heat for the first time last night, donning the Heat jersey to beat the Raptors (in Quebec) by 105-129 in a friendly.

In the encounter that opened the pre-season clashes for the 2026-27 NBA campaign, the Greek star spent only 14 minutes on the floor, during which he contributed 9 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds.

Obviously the numbers matter little compared to the thrill of witnessing the new chapter of one of the league’s biggest stars, and after 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks we now have The Greek Freak donning the colors of the Florida franchise.

Indeed, these early preseason games carry as much about preparation as about auditions. Numerous teams arrive with roster gaps and non-guaranteed contracts, so it isn’t surprising that the Heat used as many as 19 players, with none reaching 20 minutes on the court. And of course, it was also Klay Thompson’s first appearance.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, without Kawhi Leonard

While Giannis had Heat fans buzzing with his first (unofficial) appearance for the team, Kawhi Leonard wasn’t seen on the floor.

The Canadian organization, which has dragged its heels in relying on the veteran forward more than desired while the conflict with the Clippers was being resolved — they’ve paid a heavy price — decided to grant Leonard the day off, after recently signing him to a massive contract extension.

Unlike the Heat, the Canadian squad fielded only 12 players, with youngsters like Jamal Shead logging as many as 28 minutes of action. The top scorers? Tyreke Key and R.J. Barret with 15 points apiece.
