It was one of the cliffhangers of the tail end of the 2025-26 season. With no renewal during the year and after months of tough times that ended with an elimination in the play-in, Steve Kerr, coach of the Warriors, kept his future with the team in limbo for weeks. Well, now he admits that when he met with the executives he arrived convinced that he was leaving.
“I had decided to leave when there was a week or two left to finish the regular season. I simply thought: ‘It’s time.’ I felt it that way. I didn’t tell anyone, but I thought: ‘Yes, this is as far as I go.’ I simply felt it that way,” he says during his appearance on the Tom Tolbert Show.
Despite that determination, Kerr admits that the three meetings with owner Joe Lacob, executive vice president Kirk Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. were key to changing his mind. He ended up signing for two years.
“When the season ended, we all felt that we owed it to ourselves to take a couple of weeks, let the emotions settle, analyze the situation and see where we and the team stood. I’m glad I did it… and I think we arrived at a very good conclusion and to an agreement: we should continue,” he explains.
Steve Kerr, convinced to contend
The California coach explains that he is very happy to remain at the helm of the locker room, also noting that he especially enjoys seeing analysts forecasting a truly poor season for them.
“Everyone discounts us, and I think that’s fine… Let them say what they want. I have full confidence that we can have a great season. Our coaching staff has been preparing all summer and the young players have been working in the gym daily. So it’s exciting to be back,” he asserts.
